President Donald Trump returned a mail ballot in Palm Beach County on August 13 for Florida’s Republican primary, according to records reported by Politico. The White House separately confirmed that Trump voted by mail. His personal use of the system came while his administration was fighting in court for greater federal power to restrict how mail ballots are delivered to other voters.

One day before Trump’s ballot was returned, his Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to let the administration enforce provisions of his March executive order affecting mail voting. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani had blocked nationwide enforcement of the Postal Service provisions after concluding that the executive branch lacked authority to regulate elections in that way.

The order would require states to provide lists identifying voters approved to receive mail ballots and direct the Postal Service to refuse delivery of ballots outside those approved lists. Those rules do not exist only on paper. They determine whether voters who depend on mail ballots can receive them and whether state election systems can operate without a new federal barrier inserted between voters and their ballots.

Talwani’s nationwide injunction came as election deadlines were approaching. The court found that the order was creating uncertainty around mail voting, while the administration continued asking the Supreme Court to restore its authority to enforce the restrictions.

Trump, meanwhile, used the very voting method his administration is attempting to restrict. This was not his first time doing so: reporting shows he also voted by mail in an earlier Florida election while continuing his broader attacks on mail voting. The White House argues that Trump supports exceptions for circumstances including travel, illness, disability and military service rather than unrestricted mail voting.

That argument does not erase the people carrying the consequence.

Trump can rely on mail voting for himself while his administration fights for federal power that could make the same process harder for other Americans who depend on it.

The Supreme Court is asking Congress for approximately $228.4 million for fiscal year 2027: $210.3 million for salaries and operating expenses and $18.1 million for care of the building and grounds. The request covers judicial salaries, Court employees, technology, travel, administration, building maintenance and other operating costs, but a substantial portion of the proposed increase would expand the permanent security structure surrounding the Court and its members.

The Court is seeking $14.6 million and 84 additional full-time positions for personal and building protection. Its proposal would add six protective agents for each justice, 25 officers assigned to the Supreme Court building, four police-administration positions and additional support for security-related travel. It also requests $2 million for another off-site residential-security command post and $2.3 million for 12 cybersecurity employees. The separate building-and-grounds request includes $6.5 million to design an external facility that would screen visitors before they reach the Court’s main entrances.

These are not minor temporary purchases. They are investments in personnel, command infrastructure, cybersecurity and physical separation that would carry continuing costs beyond one budget year. The Court already operates behind its own police department, controlled entrances, surveillance systems, physical barriers and extensive federal protection. Its new request would enlarge that shield.

Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett told Congress that threats against the Court are projected to rise by approximately 38 percent this year after increasing 25 percent the year before. They cited swatting incidents, bomb threats, threats involving family members and the attempted attack near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home. Barrett described being sent home in a bulletproof vest and having her family endangered by a false emergency call.

Threats and violence are not accountability. They do not repair harmful rulings, restore lost rights or protect anyone affected by government power. The stronger indictment is that the Court recognizes danger immediately when it reaches the justices, translates that danger into staffing and infrastructure needs, and expects taxpayers to fund an urgent institutional response.

The Court has shown far less urgency when its own interventions expose ordinary people to government action before their cases receive full review. Through emergency stays, procedural rulings and limits on lower-court relief, the justices have repeatedly decided who must carry the risk while the legality of a Trump administration policy remains unresolved. The government is allowed to act. Workers, immigrants, trans people, students and families are left to absorb the consequences.

That pattern was visible in Trump v. CASA, where the Court restricted the use of universal injunctions in challenges to Trump’s executive order attacking birthright citizenship. The Court did not decide whether the order itself complied with the Fourteenth Amendment. It instead limited the authority of lower courts to block enforcement beyond what was necessary to protect the particular plaintiffs before them.

That procedural ruling had direct consequences. Families and children threatened by the same executive action could no longer assume that one lower-court injunction would protect everyone nationwide. Relief became more dependent on who had filed suit, whether a class could be certified, what remedy a court considered necessary and whether affected families had access to lawyers and litigation. The Court treated broad protection against a potentially unconstitutional order as an equity and procedure problem while the people exposed to that order carried the risk.

The same allocation of risk appeared in Trump v. American Federation of Government Employees. The Court stayed a lower-court order restricting the administration’s federal workforce restructuring plans. It allowed the executive order and planning process to proceed while leaving lower courts to examine whether specific agency reductions violated particular statutes.

For federal employees, that distinction was not theoretical. Workers faced layoffs, lost income, interrupted benefits and destabilized careers while litigation continued. Agencies risked losing experienced personnel and institutional knowledge. The public faced disruption to programs and services administered by the workers targeted for removal. A later ruling against a specific reduction cannot fully restore an office that has already been dismantled or the months of income a family has already lost.

In McMahon v. New York, the Court granted the administration’s request to stay a preliminary injunction restricting actions connected to the dismantling of the Department of Education. The order allowed the administration to move forward during the appeal rather than requiring it to preserve the department’s existing capacity until the legal challenge was resolved.

The consequences extend beyond federal employees. The Department of Education administers student-aid systems, oversees grant programs, collects national education data and enforces civil-rights protections relied upon by students, families and school systems. When staff and administrative capacity are removed before final judicial review, a later legal victory may arrive after programs have been disrupted, expertise has been lost and enforcement systems have been weakened. The Court’s intervention placed the risk of institutional damage on the public rather than on the administration seeking disputed authority.

Trans service members faced the same harm-first structure in United States v. Shilling. The Court stayed a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration’s ban on trans military service, allowing the policy to operate while the appeal continued. Three justices indicated that they would have denied the government’s request.

For trans service members, the stay exposed careers, income, medical care, retirement plans, professional standing and family stability to immediate disruption. It allowed the federal government to treat trans status and gender-related medical care as grounds for exclusion before the courts had finally resolved the policy’s legality. The Court did not have to issue a final endorsement of the ban to give the administration the power to begin imposing its consequences.

The Court again intervened in Trump v. Orr, granting the administration’s request to stay an injunction against its passport policy. The policy requires newly issued passports to display the government’s classification of a person’s sex at birth rather than the marker requested by trans, nonbinary and intersex applicants. The order allowed that policy to operate while the case continued.

The resulting harm includes identification that discloses or misrepresents a person’s identity, increased exposure during travel and document checks, delayed applications and barriers to employment, medical care, education and family travel. The Court treated those risks as burdens the affected people could carry during litigation while granting the administration immediate authority to enforce the policy.

These cases concern different legal questions. CASA addressed the scope of equitable relief. AFGE involved federal workforce restructuring. McMahon involved the Department of Education. Shilling concerned trans military service. Orr concerned passport identification. The pattern connecting them is the Court’s control over immediate risk.

The Trump administration acted. A lower court imposed a restriction. The Supreme Court intervened before full review and allowed the policy or restructuring to proceed. The government obtained immediate freedom of action while workers, children, trans people, students, families and public institutions absorbed consequences that could become difficult or impossible to reverse.

This is why the Court’s security request cannot be examined as though it were disconnected from the power the justices exercise. Through emergency stays and procedural orders, the Court decides whether the government must pause or whether the public must endure the policy while the legal system continues deliberating. The justices understand that exposure can become irreversible harm. Their own budget is built around preventing that possibility before it materializes.

The budget translates risk into material responses: more protective agents, more building officers, more residential coordination, more cybersecurity staff, expanded travel protection and a new screening facility. The Court does not tell the justices to wait until a threat becomes an attack before receiving protection. It seeks intervention in advance.

Ordinary people deserve the same recognition of irreversible harm. A federal worker cannot automatically recover the stability lost during an unlawful dismissal. A public agency cannot instantly rebuild years of expertise after mass removals. A trans service member cannot necessarily restore a military career interrupted by exclusion. A person denied usable identification cannot recover every missed journey, job opportunity, medical appointment or family event. A child’s constitutional protection should not depend on whether their family can quickly enter the correct lawsuit.

The Court nevertheless has repeatedly permitted these consequences to begin while the law remains contested. It gives the administration the benefit of immediate action and assigns the public the burden of surviving that action until the courts reach a final answer.

The taxpayers being asked to finance the Court’s protection include the same people living under these decisions. They include federal workers facing job loss, students relying on public education programs, immigrants confronting detention and deportation, trans people targeted by federal policy, families carrying medical debt, people struggling with food and housing costs, and communities seeking protection from government power.

They are being asked to fund additional agents, officers, command posts, cybersecurity teams and screening barriers for an institution whose interventions have repeatedly increased their own exposure to immediate harm.

Expanded protection also increases the Court’s institutional distance from the public consequences of its work. More barriers, screening, residential security, controlled travel and guarded access can protect the justices physically while further insulating them from the people living under their decisions. The public pays for the shield while remaining outside it.

The entire $228.4 million request is not a security budget. It also covers employees, technology, records, administration and building operations. That does not place the security expansion beyond scrutiny.

Congress should require a precise accounting of how many positions are being created, how each increase responds to documented risk, what the long-term cost of the new protective structure will be, what oversight governs residential and travel security, how the cybersecurity expansion will be measured and what the proposed visitor-screening facility will ultimately cost beyond its $6.5 million design phase.

The Court is entitled to submit a budget request. The public is entitled to examine the priorities and conduct of the institution requesting the money.

The Supreme Court wants more taxpayer money to expand the protection surrounding an institution whose power has generated deep public anger. The people financing that protection have every right to demand accountability for the immediate harm the Court has allowed the Trump administration to impose while litigation continues.

Powerful institutions repeatedly demand greater protection and insulation for themselves while ordinary people are left to absorb the consequences of their decisions.

A federal judge has ordered more than $5 million released to E. Jean Carroll after Trump tried to delay payment again.

The ruling came from Judge Lewis Kaplan, who rejected Trump’s request to keep the money from being released while Trump seeks another round of Supreme Court review. Carroll had already won the judgment after a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Trump wanted the money held back while he continued trying to challenge that finding.

Kaplan’s ruling matters because accountability does not end when a jury reaches a verdict. Powerful men often keep fighting after the verdict, after the appeal, after the judgment, and after money has already been set aside. Court enforcement is what prevents a judgment from becoming another document the powerful can keep out of reach.

Carroll’s case has always been bigger than one payment. A jury found that Trump sexually abused her and defamed her. Trump kept attacking the case in public, calling it political persecution and trying to frame legal accountability as a partisan weapon against him. That language is not incidental. It is part of the same strategy: deny the harm, attack the survivor, discredit the court, and keep the result delayed as long as possible.

Trump’s attorneys argued that Carroll would only face a temporary delay if the money stayed frozen, while Trump would face irreparable harm if the money were released and later distributed to third parties. That argument asks the court to treat delay as harmless for the survivor and payment as dangerous for the powerful man found liable.

The case exposes how delay can become part of the abuse of power when a survivor wins in court and is still forced to keep waiting while the person found liable uses appeals, motions, public attacks, and political language to resist the result.

The money, the judgment, and the verdict can all be in place while accountability is still kept at a distance. Until the court allows the judgment to move forward, the powerful man is still trying to control the outcome through delay.

The release of the money is not just a transfer of funds. It is the court saying that Trump cannot use another delay request to keep Carroll from receiving the judgment she won. It moves the case from a finding on paper toward enforcement in practice.

Trump’s political response followed the familiar pattern. His side attacked the case as a “Witch Hunt,” called it a “Hoax,” and framed the judgment through “lawfare” language. Those words are not facts. They are political attack phrases meant to make a jury finding sound illegitimate and to make accountability look like persecution.

That framing should not control the story, because the political language does not erase what the jury found or what the judge ordered.

The controlling fact is that a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, and a federal judge has now ordered more than $5 million released to Carroll after Trump tried to delay payment. Trump can keep appealing. He can keep issuing statements. He can keep asking higher courts to revisit the case. But continued legal maneuvering does not erase the jury’s finding or Kaplan’s order.

For survivor accountability, this is the part that often gets ignored. The public pays attention to the verdict. The cameras gather outside the courthouse. Headlines say a jury has spoken. Then the slower machinery begins: appeals, stays, bonds, deposits, motions, petitions, reconsideration requests, and delay attempts. Survivors can be forced to keep proving that the judgment means something long after the public thinks the case is over.

That power imbalance is not a side issue. It is part of the harm.

A man with money, lawyers, political power, and a public platform can keep turning the legal process into a war of exhaustion. He can tell supporters the case is fake. He can accuse the survivor and the courts of conspiracy. He can insist that any payment is an attack on him. He can keep the story alive in a way that pressures the survivor to endure another cycle of public hostility.

Carroll has already endured the trial, the public attacks, and the long fight over whether the judgment she won would actually reach her. She took Trump to court. A jury found him liable. She won a judgment. Trump tried to keep the money from being released. Kaplan rejected that delay.

That sequence shows why enforcement matters. A verdict records what a jury found. Enforcement decides whether the person found liable can keep the result suspended through power, money, and delay. In this ruling, the court moved the judgment forward.

There is also another large judgment still in the background. Trump has said he will ask the Supreme Court to review the separate $83 million award Carroll won after another jury found that Trump defamed her through later statements. That means this accountability fight is not finished. But the order releasing more than $5 million makes one thing clear: Trump’s desire to keep litigating does not automatically mean Carroll has to keep waiting.

Powerful men rely on delay because delay creates confusion. It blurs the difference between an allegation, a verdict, an appeal, and a judgment until accountability starts to look negotiable. That confusion serves the person found liable, not the survivor who already won.

Once money has been ordered, a jury finding cannot be reduced to symbolism. Carroll’s judgment is not optional because Trump wants more time, and accountability cannot remain trapped in process while the person harmed is told to wait again.

Trump tried to delay paying E. Jean Carroll, and Kaplan’s order refused to let another delay request become another shield.

More than $5 million is now ordered released to the woman a jury found he sexually abused and defamed. That is not the whole accountability story, but it is a real enforcement step. It shows that a verdict must become consequence, and that the powerful man found liable does not get to turn every delay request into protection from the judgment.

A survivor’s judgment should not be trapped behind endless delay by the powerful man found liable.

Pam Bondi told lawmakers that Todd Blanche, Donald Trump’s chosen attorney general nominee, was “in charge” of the Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein files release, according to testimony before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

The statement places Blanche at the center of a growing congressional inquiry into how the Justice Department reviewed, redacted, and released records tied to Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender, and Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate who is serving a 20-year sentence for sex-trafficking crimes.

Bondi’s testimony matters because Blanche is not only a former senior Justice Department official. He is also the person Trump has lined up to replace Bondi permanently as attorney general. If formally nominated, Blanche would need confirmation from the U.S. Senate, where the handling of the Epstein records could become part of the public record surrounding his nomination.

The question is not only what the Epstein files contain. It is who controlled their release, who oversaw redactions, who was responsible for protecting survivor information, and who will answer for the parts of the process that lawmakers and survivors say were mishandled.

Bondi appeared before the House Oversight and Reform Committee as part of its investigation into the Epstein case and the Justice Department’s compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. The law mandated the release of Epstein-related records held by the department. The Justice Department has maintained that it acted in accordance with the law.

But the release has drawn criticism from lawmakers in both parties, as well as survivors of Epstein’s abuse. Some raised concerns over redactions. Others questioned whether sensitive personal information was disclosed in the records. The central issue is transparency, but also control: what the public was allowed to see, what remained hidden, and whether survivors were protected in the process.

During her testimony, Bondi defended the Justice Department’s overall handling of the records under her leadership. At the same time, she repeatedly said she did not personally lead every part of the review.

She told lawmakers that she did not “conduct that document review” herself and said she had delegated oversight of the process to Blanche.

“He was in charge of the process and the entire release of the Epstein files,” Bondi said, according to the transcript.

That answer immediately shifted attention toward Blanche.

Blanche had served as Bondi’s deputy at the Justice Department. After Bondi’s ouster, he was appointed acting attorney general. Trump has since said he plans to nominate Blanche to the role permanently.

That creates a direct line between the Epstein files release and the person now positioned to lead the Justice Department.

Bondi’s testimony also placed the department’s mistakes under renewed scrutiny. She acknowledged that “there were redaction errors” in the release, while insisting that the department had been committed to accountability and transparency from the beginning of the process.

The distinction matters. Bondi defended the department’s work, but she also described a process she said was managed by Blanche. Lawmakers are now asking whether Blanche should answer questions directly about the review, redactions, survivor protections, and release decisions.

During a break in questioning, several Democratic lawmakers told reporters that Bondi had indicated Blanche was leading the Epstein investigation and that mistakes tied to redactions and survivor protection were being pushed back onto him.

Bondi later disputed that characterization publicly, saying it was “NOT TRUE” and that she had praised Blanche’s management of what she called a “Herculean task.”

The transcript shows a more careful picture. Bondi did identify Blanche as the official overseeing the release. She also denied that she was blaming him.

“Todd Blanche is one of the most highly ethical individuals I know,” Bondi told lawmakers. She said she believed he was making “an incredible acting attorney general” and that he managed the process “with very little error.”

That is the tension in her testimony.

Bondi defended Blanche personally while placing operational responsibility for the Epstein files release under his oversight. She did not present him as someone outside the process. She presented him as the official in charge of it.

For Epstein survivors and the public, that distinction is important.

The Epstein files are not ordinary records. They involve sexual abuse, trafficking crimes, powerful people, institutional failures, survivor privacy, and years of public demands for transparency. Any release of those records carries two obligations at once: the public’s right to know and survivors’ right not to be harmed again through careless disclosure.

That is why redaction errors and sensitive information are not minor technical issues. In a case built around exploitation and institutional failure, the handling of survivor information is part of the accountability record.

Bondi’s testimony also touched on what Trump may have known before Epstein and Maxwell’s crimes became public. Asked about Trump’s knowledge, Bondi said she was “not certain of the extent” of what he knew before the crimes became public.

A White House spokesperson later claimed Trump had been “totally exonerated on anything relating to Epstein” when contacted for comment on Bondi’s testimony.

That claim does not resolve the broader transparency question. The committee’s inquiry is focused on records, release decisions, redactions, compliance with the transparency law, and the Justice Department officials responsible for managing the process.

Bondi declined to discuss conversations she had with Trump, saying she would not comment on discussions with the president.

She was also questioned about Ghislaine Maxwell. Bondi said she learned of Maxwell’s controversial prison transfer through news reports after it happened and claimed she had “nothing to do with that.”

Asked whether Maxwell should receive a pardon, Bondi answered no.

Maxwell, she said, was a “monster.”

“I believe she should die in prison,” Bondi told lawmakers.

The exchange added another layer to the testimony: Bondi distanced herself from Maxwell’s transfer, rejected a pardon, defended the department’s Epstein files work, and repeatedly identified Blanche as the official who oversaw the document release.

The committee also asked whether victims or victims’ attorneys reached out to the Justice Department after Bondi took office. Bondi said yes, adding that there were multiple victims and that many were represented by attorneys.

Asked whether she personally met with them, Bondi said she spoke to one attorney but could not recall the attorney’s name. She said she believed she referred the attorney to the FBI.

“You know, when a victim is represented, you go through their attorney,” Bondi said.

That answer may become another point of scrutiny. Survivors have repeatedly argued that their voices must not be treated as secondary to the institutional process. In the Epstein case, where so much of the public demand for transparency has come from survivors, the question of how the Justice Department communicated with victims and their attorneys is not procedural background. It is part of the case.

The political pressure is now moving toward Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel. After Bondi’s testimony, Democrats urged Representative James Comer, the Republican chair of the committee, to bring both men before the panel to answer questions as part of the investigation.

That next step would matter because Bondi has now placed Blanche directly inside the chain of command.

If Blanche oversaw the release, then he is the official positioned to answer the questions Bondi did not fully resolve: how the review was conducted, how redaction decisions were made, how survivor privacy was protected, how errors occurred, and what the department did to correct them.

The Epstein files have always been about more than one criminal case. They are about a system of access, protection, secrecy, and institutional failure that allowed abuse to continue while survivors waited for accountability.

The files are the record. The release process is now part of the record too.

If powerful institutions can control what is released, mishandle sensitive information, and then diffuse responsibility across officials, the public is left with the appearance of transparency without a clear line of accountability.

That is why Bondi’s testimony matters.

It does not answer every question about the Epstein files. It points to the next person who should be asked.

Todd Blanche is now Trump’s chosen attorney general nominee. Bondi told lawmakers he oversaw the Epstein files release. Congress is still examining redactions, survivor privacy concerns, and DOJ transparency.

The question now is not only what the Epstein files contain.

It is who controlled their release, who decided what the public could see, and who will answer for the parts survivors and lawmakers say were mishandled.

According to Rep. Yassamin Ansari, Bondi appeared for a transcribed interview that happened behind closed doors, was not under oath, and was not video recorded. Ansari said that mattered because the committee had issued a subpoena for Bondi to answer questions publicly. In a case shaped by survivor testimony, government failure, and years of institutional protection, those conditions turned a central interview into another proceeding where the public could not see the questioning, hear the answers, or judge the evasions for itself.

Ansari said Bondi refused to answer questions involving President Donald Trump and shifted responsibility for the Epstein files rollout toward Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel. That point sits at the center of the video because Bondi’s own role remains under scrutiny.

The segment discussed reporting that current and former Justice Department officials said Bondi was informed of key developments in the Epstein matter and signed off on major decisions, including a memo that formally ended the government’s review of the files. Bondi’s position, according to the discussion, was that she did not personally lead every part of the effort or conduct the document review herself. That answer does not close the question; it sharpens it, because public accountability does not disappear when a powerful official says the work was delegated.

The problem is not simply whether Bondi reviewed every document herself. The problem is whether the Justice Department, under Trump’s administration, handled the Epstein files in a way that exposed survivors while protecting officials, institutions, and powerful figures still shielded from a full accounting.

Ansari described the release of Jane Doe identities in the Epstein files rollout as an act that frightened survivors and could discourage them from speaking out. That is not a clerical mistake in a normal records dispute. In a case built on sexual abuse, institutional disbelief, and survivor exposure, mishandling victim information becomes part of the harm.

Bondi’s answers about Ghislaine Maxwell added another layer to the concern. Ansari said lawmakers questioned Bondi about Maxwell’s transfer from a higher-security prison to a minimum-security facility, as well as the circumstances surrounding Blanche’s interview with Maxwell.

According to Ansari, Bondi said she did not know who initiated that interview or how the transfer decision came about, and directed questions about the move to the Bureau of Prisons. Bondi also reportedly said Maxwell should not receive a presidential pardon and called her a monster. That statement may be obvious, but it does not resolve the larger issue: Trump has not ruled out a pardon, and the administration’s handling of Maxwell remains part of the suspicion surrounding the files.

The video’s strongest accountability point comes through Ansari’s description of Republican absence. She said only one Republican, Chairman James Comer, was present for Bondi’s interview, while other Republicans had shown up for interviews involving Democrats such as Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.

That contrast matters because it shows the political shape of the investigation. When the questioning could be aimed at Democrats, Republicans were present. When the questioning centered on Bondi, Trump, Blanche, Patel, and the administration’s handling of the Epstein files, Ansari said they were absent. Her conclusion was direct: Republicans do not want to participate in the parts of the investigation that expose the Trump administration’s role in the cover-up.

A process that keeps producing procedure without answering those questions does not deliver accountability; it protects the conditions that made the cover-up possible.

Lawmakers have interviewed some of the most powerful people ever pulled into a congressional inquiry tied to Epstein, including a former president, former Cabinet officials, financial figures, lawyers, and people who had direct proximity to Epstein’s world. Yet the central failure remains intact. Survivors have been asked to revisit trauma, the public has been told to wait for process, and Washington still has not produced a full accounting of who was protected, what the government failed to do, and why no broader chain of accountability has followed.

The latest flashpoint came after Pam Bondi, President Donald Trump’s former attorney general, sat for a transcribed interview connected to the Trump administration’s handling of Epstein materials. Lawmakers had hoped her testimony would answer questions about the chaotic release of files, the administration’s decisions around what was made public, and the wider refusal to provide a full record. Instead, Democrats left the interview furious, accusing Bondi of defending the administration’s handling of the material and refusing to answer questions about Trump’s involvement. That matters because the Epstein files are not just documents. They are part of a record survivors have been forced to fight for while the powerful continue to claim ignorance, dodge responsibility, or narrow the scope of what the public is allowed to know.

The survivor harm in this story is not abstract. Several survivors traveled to Washington to confront Bondi and demand acknowledgment from the government that failed them. They have already endured years of court fights, public exposure, institutional disbelief, and political promises that turn into delay. The Department of Justice’s release of Epstein files added another layer of harm when the material reportedly included nude photos and personal information of potential victims. That is not transparency for survivors. That is a government process that can expose the harmed while still shielding the systems and people who helped Epstein operate.

Annie Farmer put the deeper failure plainly when she said the government’s refusal to acknowledge its failures has caused harm and made justice or healing harder to reach. That sentence should sit at the center of the article because it names what Washington keeps trying to evade. Survivors are not asking for spectacle. They are asking for acknowledgment, accountability, and a record that does not force them to keep proving the obvious: Epstein was protected by wealth, access, legal failure, and institutions that had chances to stop him and did not. The committee’s work has also reached toward figures in finance, business, and public life whose names have remained part of the broader Epstein record. The scope shows that Congress knows the case cannot be treated as one man’s crimes alone. Epstein’s abuse depended on access, protection, money, silence, and people around him who have insisted they knew nothing about the abuse of underage girls.

That is where the investigation keeps running into the same wall. High-profile testimony may create headlines, but it has not yet produced the criminal culpability or definitive government acknowledgment survivors are still asking for. The public has heard that witnesses knew nothing. The public has seen officials point to procedure, privilege, legal limits, and file restrictions. The public has watched Washington hold interviews while survivors continue to carry the burden of pushing the case forward. That gap between process and justice is the real story.

Rep. Ro Khanna, who sponsored legislation to force the release of Epstein case files, framed the unresolved question directly: why has there not been a single investigation of people who allegedly abused victims or committed financial crimes connected to the Epstein network? That question cuts through the fog because it moves past file management and toward accountability. The issue is not only whether the government releases another batch of records. The issue is whether the government is willing to follow the records toward the people, institutions, financial systems, and failures that allowed Epstein’s abuse to continue.

The political lines around Epstein have sometimes shifted in unusual ways. But settlements and resignations are not the same as a public accounting of how the network survived, who enabled it, and why the American justice system still cannot fully answer for itself.

Rep. Melanie Stansbury named the contradiction clearly when she pointed out that a prince has been taken down while the U.S. Department of Justice continues withholding files. Her conclusion was blunt: that is not a failure, it is a choice. That line belongs in the article because it captures the accountability frame without turning the story into theater. Sarah Kellen is stepping into Congress with a story that cannot be flattened into a clean category. She was one of the women named as a “potential co-conspirator” in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2007 nonprosecution agreement, the deal that helped him avoid the full weight of federal accountability while shielding named women and others around him from prosecution. Now, on the eve of a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee, Kellen says she was not only part of Epstein’s orbit. She says she was abused, manipulated, and silenced by it.

That does not erase what other survivors have said about her. Survivors of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell have alleged that Kellen helped arrange logistics around the abuse, including calls, massage appointments, escorting girls, and encouraging girls to bring others. Those allegations sit at the center of why Kellen’s name has remained so charged for nearly two decades. Some survivors still view her as someone who enabled the harm that reached them.

But Kellen and her lawyers are asking the public to see a more complicated truth: that Epstein’s system did not only use money, power, lawyers, and secrecy. It also used people. It blurred roles, trapped victims inside the machinery, and then left the public to sort through the damage after prosecutors had already allowed Epstein’s network to shape the record.

That is why her testimony matters. Congress should not use Kellen’s appearance to sanitize her image, erase survivor anger, or turn complexity into absolution. It should use her testimony to expose how Epstein’s system worked, how federal prosecutors failed to untangle it, and how the 2007 deal helped protect power while survivors were left carrying the consequences.

Kellen worked for Epstein for more than a decade, beginning in 2001. According to allegations made in law enforcement interviews, civil lawsuits, and public documents, her role placed her near some of the logistics that made Epstein’s abuse possible. That is not a minor detail. In trafficking systems, logistics are not background noise. They are often how harm becomes routine, how access gets normalized, and how victims are moved through a system designed to look ordinary from the outside.

At the same time, Kellen says Epstein sexually and psychologically abused her. Her lawyers say prosecutors eventually recognized her as a victim and declined to prosecute her. She has described her experience as one marked by grooming, manipulation, and a power imbalance that made it difficult to understand the full reality of what Epstein was doing while she was inside his world. That claim deserves scrutiny, but it also deserves to be examined seriously because Epstein’s entire operation depended on coercion, isolation, hierarchy, and control.

The public record already shows why this cannot be reduced to one simple frame. Prosecutors once considered charging Epstein over an alleged assault involving Kellen. Days later, the direction of the deal shifted, and Epstein’s lawyer proposed language protecting “potential co-conspirators,” including Kellen. By the time the nonprosecution agreement was signed, Kellen was no longer treated in the document as a possible victim of Epstein. She was named as someone protected by the agreement, while Epstein remained the central beneficiary.

That matters because the deal did more than protect Epstein. It shaped how the public understood everyone around him. It placed Kellen into a category that has followed her ever since, without clear evidence that prosecutors had fully interviewed her, fully investigated her experience, or fully separated what she may have done from what may have been done to her. The agreement created a public label before the public received a full accounting.

The 2007 agreement was already one of the most infamous failures in modern prosecutorial history. Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution-related offenses, served less than 13 months with work release, and registered as a sex offender. The federal case was resolved in a way that helped avoid a full public trial, shielded others from exposure, and denied survivors the kind of open accountability that could have forced the network into daylight.

Kellen’s account adds another layer to that failure. If she was named in the deal without being interviewed or consulted, then prosecutors allowed Epstein and his lawyers to define her legal position before they fully heard from her. If prosecutors knew of allegations that Epstein assaulted her but still allowed her to be labeled through his deal, then the system did not simply fail to prosecute Epstein properly. It failed to publicly distinguish between victims, witnesses, alleged enablers, and people trapped inside the architecture of his abuse.

That distinction is not about excusing harm. It is about accountability being precise enough to matter. Epstein’s world was built to confuse responsibility, blur proximity, and make everyone around him useful to his survival. A serious investigation should have taken that apart piece by piece. Instead, the deal helped compress the story into legal categories that served Epstein’s outcome more than the truth.

One of the most disturbing pieces of the reported record is the St. Thomas airport incident. Kellen says that around 2007, she and another woman were with Epstein when someone indicated the FBI wanted to speak with them. According to her account, Epstein went to speak with them instead, then returned and told the women to leave. Documents reportedly show that a federal law enforcement agent had gone to the airport hoping to serve target letters on two women expected to be traveling with Epstein, but was told Epstein was traveling alone.

If that account is accurate, it raises a brutal question: how much access did Epstein still control while federal authorities were supposedly investigating him? A man under investigation for sexual abuse should not have been able to function as the gatekeeper between law enforcement and women in his orbit. Yet that is the pattern that keeps appearing in Epstein’s story. He controlled money, movement, lawyers, houses, planes, schedules, and narratives. The system investigating him too often seemed to move around that control instead of breaking through it.

Kellen says the nonprosecution agreement made her a target and made it impossible for her to speak. That claim deserves to be weighed against the anger of survivors who say she harmed them or helped facilitate harm. Both realities can exist inside the same investigation. A person can be victimized by a predator and still be part of a system that harmed others. The question for Congress is not whether Kellen can be placed cleanly into one moral category. The question is what Epstein’s machinery made possible, who benefited from the confusion, and why prosecutors allowed so much of it to remain unresolved.

This is where Congress has to be careful. Kellen’s testimony should not become a redemption tour. It should not become a spectacle where complexity is used to soften the harm done to Epstein’s victims. Survivors who accuse Kellen of helping arrange access to abuse deserve to have those claims treated seriously. Their anger is part of the record too, and no testimony should erase what they have carried.

But Congress also should not ignore the possibility that Epstein’s system consumed vulnerable people and then used them as shields. Trafficking networks often rely on layered roles, trauma bonds, dependency, fear, and coercion. That does not make every action harmless. It means investigators have to understand how control works if they want the truth instead of a simplified story that lets the most powerful people disappear behind lesser names.

The deeper failure is that the public is still trying to understand these roles nearly two decades after the sweetheart deal. That delay is not accidental. It is the product of a legal process that protected Epstein’s structure instead of exposing it. The 2007 agreement allowed him to absorb minimal public consequences while survivors were denied the full force of federal accountability. It also allowed the network around him to remain blurred, half-named, and underexamined.

Kellen’s upcoming testimony should be judged by what it reveals, not by whether it makes people more comfortable with her. What did she see? Who controlled access to victims? Who gave instructions? What did Epstein’s lawyers negotiate and why? What did prosecutors know before they named her? Why was she not interviewed before the agreement shaped her public identity? Who else was protected by the ambiguity of that deal?

Those are the questions Congress should pursue. Not because Kellen’s pain cancels out anyone else’s, and not because survivor complexity should be used to dilute accountability. The point is the opposite. Epstein’s system survived because power was allowed to hide inside complexity. The only way to honor survivors is to pull that complexity into the open without letting it become cover.

Sarah Kellen says she was Epstein’s victim. Survivors have accused her of helping enable abuse. Prosecutors once considered her through more than one lens, then allowed Epstein’s agreement to define her as a “potential co-conspirator” without the public ever getting a full explanation. Leon Botstein is stepping down from the presidency of Bard College after an independent review found that his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was far more extensive than he had publicly acknowledged, and that his repeated interactions with the convicted sex offender could have alerted him to the possibility that he and Bard were helping facilitate Epstein’s access to women.

The review, conducted by the law firm WilmerHale and commissioned by Bard’s board of trustees, found that Botstein made about 25 visits to Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse, took a two-day trip to Epstein’s private island, Little St. James, and hosted two visits by Epstein to Bard. The review also found that some of those interactions included “multiple women” who have since been identified as Epstein victims.

That is not a minor clarification. It is not simply a reputational problem. It is the record of an elite institution’s president repeatedly engaging with Jeffrey Epstein years after Epstein’s sex-offender status was public, while pursuing him as a donor and minimizing the relationship when the scrutiny finally arrived.

Botstein has not been charged with wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. That matters legally. But the question raised by the WilmerHale review is not only whether Botstein committed a crime. The question is how a powerful college president chose to treat Epstein’s presence, money, access, and reputation after the risks were already visible.

According to the review, Botstein and Epstein were in contact from 2012 to 2019. Epstein’s 2008 conviction was not hidden by then. His status was public. His wealth, social access, and continued proximity to elite institutions were part of the very machinery that allowed him to keep moving through respectable spaces long after he should have been treated as a danger.

The review found that Botstein had previously said he was not friends with Epstein. But WilmerHale concluded that his public statements and comments to the Bard community minimized and were not fully accurate in describing the relationship. The visits, invitations, island trip, campus access, and financial interactions make that minimization impossible to dismiss as a matter of wording.

This is where the story becomes larger than one retirement announcement. Institutions helped Jeffrey Epstein convert money into legitimacy. They helped him remain adjacent to power, education, culture, science, philanthropy, and public status. Each invitation, each meeting, each polite engagement, each donor conversation, and each institutional door made Epstein appear less like a convicted predator and more like a man still welcome among the powerful.

That kind of legitimacy had consequences.

WilmerHale’s review found that Botstein failed to consider that his actions could validate and legitimize Epstein to potential victims or their parents. That sentence belongs at the center of the story. Epstein’s danger was not only what he did in private. It was also the public credibility that powerful people and institutions continued to give him. When a college president meets with him repeatedly, hosts him, visits his properties, and pursues his money, it tells the outside world that Epstein remains inside the circle.

That circle mattered.

The review also suggested that Botstein had been warned by a senior faculty member not to engage with Epstein. Instead of heeding that warning, Botstein reportedly relied on the view that “an ordinary sex offender” like Epstein could be presumed rehabilitated because he had served time in prison. The review also found that Botstein forcefully argued that Bard’s need for funds was paramount.

That is the moral collapse at the center of the case.

The issue is not only that Botstein misread Epstein. It is that he treated the possibility of donor money as powerful enough to override warning signs, reputational danger, student risk, and the basic ethical burden of dealing with a known sex offender. The report states that his view was, “I would take money from Satan if it permitted me to do God’s work.”

That line reveals the institutional logic more clearly than any formal statement could.

When institutions convince themselves that their mission is so important that they can take money from almost anyone, they create a permission structure for abuse-adjacent power. They tell themselves the cause is noble enough to sanitize the source. They convert moral compromise into strategic necessity. They treat money as neutral, even when the person offering it is using money to buy access, rehabilitation, and proximity.

Epstein understood that world. He moved through it with precision. He attached himself to universities, scientists, artists, academics, and public intellectuals. He used donations, promises, meetings, and proximity to powerful institutions to rebuild social credibility after his conviction. That credibility did not appear on its own. It was granted.

Bard’s review shows one example of how that granting worked.

Epstein was invited into Bard’s orbit. He visited the campus. He was pursued as a donor. Botstein visited him repeatedly. There were invitations that were not accepted but that could have exposed Bard students to Epstein, including a stay at Bard’s guest cottage, a concert by conservatory students, and a visit to Bard High School Early College. The review found that Botstein did not see a risk to Bard’s reputation in pursuing Epstein or the potential risk to Bard students of exposure to him.

That failure is staggering.

A college president has a duty not only to raise money but to protect the institution’s students, integrity, and moral boundaries. Pursuing a convicted sex offender as a donor while failing to consider the risk to students is not ordinary fundraising. It is a failure of judgment at the level of institutional governance.

The financial questions deepen that failure. WilmerHale’s review found that Botstein accepted fees under a consulting agreement with an Epstein entity in 2016 and did not disclose the agreement to Bard’s board because he intended to donate those funds to Bard. According to the review, Botstein told investigators that the funds were donated by rolling them into his and/or his wife’s contributions over the years and were not separately identified from Epstein.

The review found that, for that reason, the documents could not confirm for the board the contribution of those fees to Bard.

That is not a clean record. It is a foggy one. Consulting fees tied to an Epstein entity, not disclosed to the board at the time, later described as having been folded into personal or family contributions without being separately identified, create exactly the kind of opacity that institutions should not tolerate when dealing with a convicted sex offender.

The board has said funds associated with Epstein will be directed to organizations supporting survivors of sexual harm. That step matters, but it does not erase the underlying issue. The question is not only where the money goes now. The question is why Epstein’s money, access, and invitations were allowed near Bard in the first place.

The board’s response also deserves scrutiny. Bard’s trustees said they received WilmerHale’s findings on April 30 and that Botstein then submitted his “retirement,” effective June 30. The board thanked him for more than five decades of service and called for an orderly transition. It also acknowledged that the concerns raised in recent months were serious and deeply felt.

An orderly transition may be administratively useful. It should not become a soft landing that replaces accountability.

Botstein’s 51 years at Bard are part of the story. His long tenure and influence explain why the institution may be inclined to frame his exit with gratitude and stability. But longevity cannot be allowed to swallow the findings. A five-decade legacy does not cancel out a review showing that the president minimized his relationship with Epstein, ignored warnings, pursued Epstein’s money, accepted consulting fees, and failed to consider how his actions could legitimize Epstein to victims and families.

That record has to remain visible.

Botstein’s own statement did not address WilmerHale’s findings. Instead, he said he had previously informed the board that, in light of his 51 years of service and upcoming 80th birthday, it had been his intention to retire from the presidency. He said he intended to remain a faculty member, teacher, and musician, and would live at Finberg House on Bard’s campus.

That response leaves a major silence. If an independent review finds that a college president minimized his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and failed to consider how his conduct could validate Epstein, a statement about prior retirement intentions does not answer the ethical questions. It avoids them.

The public should not have to choose between acknowledging Botstein’s long service and recognizing the gravity of the review. Both can be true. He may have shaped Bard for decades, and he may also have made decisions around Epstein that exposed a serious institutional failure. Service does not immunize judgment. Reputation does not erase responsibility.

The deeper question is how many institutions still rely on that kind of immunity.

Epstein’s network survived for so long because powerful people kept treating his presence as manageable. They treated him as complicated, useful, rehabilitated, eccentric, wealthy, or worth tolerating. They treated access to money as a reason to keep doors open. They treated warnings as obstacles instead of alarms. They treated public facts about his conviction as something that could be rationalized away.

That is how institutional protection works. It often does not look like a direct conspiracy. It looks like invitations, meetings, explanations, donor cultivation, private judgment calls, softened public statements, and decisions not to ask too many questions. It looks like people with power deciding that the money, status, or connection is worth the risk.

But the risk was not borne equally. Epstein’s victims carried the consequences. Students and young women were the people who could be exposed. Until those steps occur, “mixed messaging” will remain the operating system. It will look like movement while producing delay. It will sound like accountability while protecting discretion. Epstein died in federal custody in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving minors. His death was ruled a suicide by the New York City medical examiner. Now, lawmakers are seeking sworn answers from one of the correctional officers who was on duty the night Epstein was found dead inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.

The request comes as federal agencies continue releasing millions of pages of Epstein-related records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, legislation that ordered the Justice Department to disclose documents connected to Epstein’s detention, associates, and investigations.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer sent a formal letter to Noel on March 13 requesting that she appear for a transcribed interview with the committee on March 26. Comer said information obtained through public reporting, Justice Department releases, and documents gathered by the committee indicates Noel may have knowledge relevant to the investigation.

“Due to public reporting, documents released by the Department of Justice, and documents obtained by the Committee, the Committee believes you have information that will assist in its investigation,” Comer wrote in the letter requesting her testimony.

Noel worked as a correctional officer in the Special Housing Unit of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, the high-security unit where Epstein was being held. She was one of two guards assigned to monitor the tier the night Epstein died.

In 2019, federal prosecutors charged Noel and another guard, Michael Thomas, with falsifying official records. Prosecutors alleged the two officers failed to perform required prisoner checks during their shift and instead spent significant portions of the night at their desks. According to the indictment, no formal inmate counts were conducted in the Special Housing Unit from approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 9 until about 6:30 a.m. on August 10, when Epstein was discovered unresponsive in his cell.

The charges were later resolved through an agreement with prosecutors, and the case against Noel was ultimately dismissed. She did not admit guilt as part of that resolution.

A 2023 report issued by the Justice Department’s Inspector General provided additional details about activity in the unit that night. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed a corrections officer believed to be Noel approaching the tier where Epstein’s cell was located at approximately 10:40 p.m. on August 9 while carrying linen or inmate clothing.

Investigators noted that this appeared to be the last recorded approach to Epstein’s tier before he was discovered the following morning.

During a sworn interview with investigators in 2021, Noel denied distributing linen to Epstein or providing him with any excess bedding found in his cell. She also told investigators she believed she was the last person to see Epstein alive, estimating that encounter occurred around 10:00 p.m. on the evening of August 9.

The committee’s request for Noel’s testimony is part of a broader congressional probe examining the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death and the federal government’s handling of evidence connected to his case.

The Justice Department has said it has released more than three million pages of records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, along with thousands of videos and images connected to the investigation. Additional materials have been identified for release pending court approvals and privacy reviews.

The department missed a December 19 deadline established by the 2025 law requiring the initial records release, but officials have continued uploading documents as part of the ongoing disclosure process. Some files posted online were later removed, prompting scrutiny from lawmakers and victims’ advocates over redactions and record handling.

Under the committee’s current schedule, Noel is expected to appear for a transcribed interview on March 26 unless the hearing is postponed or modified by investigators or the witness.

Her testimony could provide one of the most detailed firsthand accounts yet about what occurred inside the facility during the final hours before Epstein was found dead in federal custody.

But this time, the figures are not fictional lovers.

The monument’s plaque references the Titanic scene while drawing a comparison to Trump and Epstein.

“The tragic love story between Jack and Rose was built on luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secret nude sketches. This monument honors the bond between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, a friendship seemingly built on luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secret nude sketches.”

The latter is a reference to a racy birthday card for Epstein that seemingly bears Trump’s signature. (The card, with its sketch of what appeared to be a girl’s body, was the subject of a different installation by The Secret Handshake last year.) Trump has denied authoring the card.

Flanking the statue are several 10-foot banners featuring a photo of Trump and Epstein.

In a nod to the Justice Department’s heavy-handed redactions in its documents about Epstein, the banners also include an image resembling a federal agency logo — except part of the agency name is redacted.

Up close, the scale of the display becomes clearer — the statue centered, with banners stretching outward along the Mall.

Why the banners?

The Secret Handshake said it’s simple, really.

“Because 2026 has been a banner year for President Trump. Meaning… he’s added giant banners of his face to federal buildings all across DC. We want to help him on his mission by tossing a few of our own in the mix,” the group said.

Trump has not been able to kill the Epstein story and has claimed that the files that have been released about the dead financier have absolved him of any wrongdoing.

But the demand for transparency and accountability around the Epstein investigation has not disappeared. If anything, it has only intensified as more questions remain unanswered.

Within hours he would be in custody, facing federal charges related to sex trafficking of minors. During the ride to Manhattan, he reportedly asked whether the arrest concerned “sex trafficking” and “underage” girls. It did. Weeks later, he would be dead in a jail cell.

His death ended the prosecution against him, but it did not end the questions. In the years since, only one associate — Ghislaine Maxwell — has been convicted in federal court. Despite decades of allegations, sprawling financial relationships, and documented recruitment networks, the wider circle around Epstein has largely avoided criminal exposure in the United States.

Newly disclosed Justice Department materials, including internal emails and memoranda, offer a clearer view into why that happened. Early Warnings That Went Nowhere

One of the earliest known reports came in the mid-1990s. Maria Farmer, an artist who worked for Epstein, contacted authorities after growing alarmed about his behavior.
