A White House spokesperson later claimed Trump had been “totally exonerated on anything relating to Epstein” when contacted for comment on Bondi’s testimony.

That claim does not resolve the broader transparency question. The committee’s inquiry is focused on records, release decisions, redactions, compliance with the transparency law, and the Justice Department officials responsible for managing the process.

Bondi declined to discuss conversations she had with Trump, saying she would not comment on discussions with the president.

She was also questioned about Ghislaine Maxwell. Bondi said she learned of Maxwell’s controversial prison transfer through news reports after it happened and claimed she had “nothing to do with that.”

Asked whether Maxwell should receive a pardon, Bondi answered no.

Maxwell, she said, was a “monster.”

“I believe she should die in prison,” Bondi told lawmakers.

Sarah Kellen is stepping into Congress with a story that cannot be flattened into a clean category. She was one of the women named as a “potential co-conspirator” in Jeffrey Epstein’s 2007 nonprosecution agreement, the deal that helped him avoid the full weight of federal accountability while shielding named women and others around him from prosecution. Now, on the eve of a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee, Kellen says she was not only part of Epstein’s orbit. She says she was abused, manipulated, and silenced by it.

That does not erase what other survivors have said about her. Survivors of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell have alleged that Kellen helped arrange logistics around the abuse, including calls, massage appointments, escorting girls, and encouraging girls to bring others. Those allegations sit at the center of why Kellen’s name has remained so charged for nearly two decades. Some survivors still view her as someone who enabled the harm that reached them.

But Kellen and her lawyers are asking the public to see a more complicated truth: that Epstein’s system did not only use money, power, lawyers, and secrecy. It also used people. It blurred roles, trapped victims inside the machinery, and then left the public to sort through the damage after prosecutors had already allowed Epstein’s network to shape the record.

That is why her testimony matters. Congress should not use Kellen’s appearance to sanitize her image, erase survivor anger, or turn complexity into absolution. Kellen worked for Epstein for more than a decade, beginning in 2001. They are often how harm becomes routine, how access gets normalized, and how victims are moved through a system designed to look ordinary from the outside.

At the same time, Kellen says Epstein sexually and psychologically abused her. Her lawyers say prosecutors eventually recognized her as a victim and declined to prosecute her. She has described her experience as one marked by grooming, manipulation, and a power imbalance that made it difficult to understand the full reality of what Epstein was doing while she was inside his world. That claim deserves scrutiny, but it also deserves to be examined seriously because Epstein’s entire operation depended on coercion, isolation, hierarchy, and control.

The public record already shows why this cannot be reduced to one simple frame. Prosecutors once considered charging Epstein over an alleged assault involving Kellen. Days later, the direction of the deal shifted, and Epstein’s lawyer proposed language protecting “potential co-conspirators,” including Kellen. By the time the nonprosecution agreement was signed, Kellen was no longer treated in the document as a possible victim of Epstein. She was named as someone protected by the agreement, while Epstein remained the central beneficiary.

That matters because the deal did more than protect Epstein. It shaped how the public understood everyone around him. It placed Kellen into a category that has followed her ever since, without clear evidence that prosecutors had fully interviewed her, fully investigated her experience, or fully separated what she may have done from what may have been done to her. The agreement created a public label before the public received a full accounting.

The 2007 agreement was already one of the most infamous failures in modern prosecutorial history. Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution-related offenses, served less than 13 months with work release, and registered as a sex offender. The federal case was resolved in a way that helped avoid a full public trial, shielded others from exposure, and denied survivors the kind of open accountability that could have forced the network into daylight.

Kellen’s account adds another layer to that failure. If she was named in the deal without being interviewed or consulted, then prosecutors allowed Epstein and his lawyers to define her legal position before they fully heard from her. If prosecutors knew of allegations that Epstein assaulted her but still allowed her to be labeled through his deal, then the system did not simply fail to prosecute Epstein properly. It failed to publicly distinguish between victims, witnesses, alleged enablers, and people trapped inside the architecture of his abuse.

That distinction is not about excusing harm. It is about accountability being precise enough to matter. Epstein’s world was built to confuse responsibility, blur proximity, and make everyone around him useful to his survival. A serious investigation should have taken that apart piece by piece. Instead, the deal helped compress the story into legal categories that served Epstein’s outcome more than the truth.

One of the most disturbing pieces of the reported record is the St. Thomas airport incident. Kellen says that around 2007, she and another woman were with Epstein when someone indicated the FBI wanted to speak with them. According to her account, Epstein went to speak with them instead, then returned and told the women to leave. Documents reportedly show that a federal law enforcement agent had gone to the airport hoping to serve target letters on two women expected to be traveling with Epstein, but was told Epstein was traveling alone.

If that account is accurate, it raises a brutal question: how much access did Epstein still control while federal authorities were supposedly investigating him? A man under investigation for sexual abuse should not have been able to function as the gatekeeper between law enforcement and women in his orbit. Yet that is the pattern that keeps appearing in Epstein’s story. He controlled money, movement, lawyers, houses, planes, schedules, and narratives. The system investigating him too often seemed to move around that control instead of breaking through it.

Kellen says the nonprosecution agreement made her a target and made it impossible for her to speak. That claim deserves to be weighed against the anger of survivors who say she harmed them or helped facilitate harm. Both realities can exist inside the same investigation. A person can be victimized by a predator and still be part of a system that harmed others. The question for Congress is not whether Kellen can be placed cleanly into one moral category. Those are the questions Congress should pursue. Not because Kellen’s pain cancels out anyone else’s, and not because survivor complexity should be used to dilute accountability. The point is the opposite. Epstein’s system survived because power was allowed to hide inside complexity. The only way to honor survivors is to pull that complexity into the open without letting it become cover.

Leon Botstein is stepping down from the presidency of Bard College after an independent review found that his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was far more extensive than he had publicly acknowledged, and that his repeated interactions with the convicted sex offender could have alerted him to the possibility that he and Bard were helping facilitate Epstein’s access to women.

The review, conducted by the law firm WilmerHale and commissioned by Bard’s board of trustees, found that Botstein made about 25 visits to Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse, took a two-day trip to Epstein’s private island, Little St. James, and hosted two visits by Epstein to Bard. The review also found that some of those interactions included “multiple women” who have since been identified as Epstein victims.

That is not a minor clarification. It is not simply a reputational problem. It is the record of an elite institution’s president repeatedly engaging with Jeffrey Epstein years after Epstein’s sex-offender status was public, while pursuing him as a donor and minimizing the relationship when the scrutiny finally arrived.

Botstein has not been charged with wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. That matters legally. But the question raised by the WilmerHale review is not only whether Botstein committed a crime. The question is how a powerful college president chose to treat Epstein’s presence, money, access, and reputation after the risks were already visible.

According to the review, Botstein and Epstein were in contact from 2012 to 2019. Epstein’s 2008 conviction was not hidden by then. His status was public. His wealth, social access, and continued proximity to elite institutions were part of the very machinery that allowed him to keep moving through respectable spaces long after he should have been treated as a danger.

The review found that Botstein had previously said he was not friends with Epstein. But WilmerHale concluded that his public statements and comments to the Bard community minimized and were not fully accurate in describing the relationship. This is where the story becomes larger than one retirement announcement. Institutions helped Jeffrey Epstein convert money into legitimacy. WilmerHale’s review found that Botstein failed to consider that his actions could validate and legitimize Epstein to potential victims or their parents. When a college president meets with him repeatedly, hosts him, visits his properties, and pursues his money, it tells the outside world that Epstein remains inside the circle.

The review also suggested that Botstein had been warned by a senior faculty member not to engage with Epstein. Instead of heeding that warning, Botstein reportedly relied on the view that “an ordinary sex offender” like Epstein could be presumed rehabilitated because he had served time in prison. The review also found that Botstein forcefully argued that Bard’s need for funds was paramount.

That is the moral collapse at the center of the case.

The issue is not only that Botstein misread Epstein. It is that he treated the possibility of donor money as powerful enough to override warning signs, reputational danger, student risk, and the basic ethical burden of dealing with a known sex offender. The report states that his view was, “I would take money from Satan if it permitted me to do God’s work.”

That line reveals the institutional logic more clearly than any formal statement could.

When institutions convince themselves that their mission is so important that they can take money from almost anyone, they create a permission structure for abuse-adjacent power. They tell themselves the cause is noble enough to sanitize the source. They convert moral compromise into strategic necessity. They treat money as neutral, even when the person offering it is using money to buy access, rehabilitation, and proximity.

Epstein understood that world. He moved through it with precision. He attached himself to universities, scientists, artists, academics, and public intellectuals. He used donations, promises, meetings, and proximity to powerful institutions to rebuild social credibility after his conviction. That credibility did not appear on its own. It was granted.

Bard’s review shows one example of how that granting worked.

Epstein was invited into Bard’s orbit. He visited the campus. He was pursued as a donor. Botstein visited him repeatedly. There were invitations that were not accepted but that could have exposed Bard students to Epstein, including a stay at Bard’s guest cottage, a concert by conservatory students, and a visit to Bard High School Early College. The review found that Botstein did not see a risk to Bard’s reputation in pursuing Epstein or the potential risk to Bard students of exposure to him.

That failure is staggering.

A college president has a duty not only to raise money but to protect the institution’s students, integrity, and moral boundaries. Pursuing a convicted sex offender as a donor while failing to consider the risk to students is not ordinary fundraising. It is a failure of judgment at the level of institutional governance.

The financial questions deepen that failure. WilmerHale’s review found that Botstein accepted fees under a consulting agreement with an Epstein entity in 2016 and did not disclose the agreement to Bard’s board because he intended to donate those funds to Bard. According to the review, Botstein told investigators that the funds were donated by rolling them into his and/or his wife’s contributions over the years and were not separately identified from Epstein.

The review found that, for that reason, the documents could not confirm for the board the contribution of those fees to Bard.

That is not a clean record. It is a foggy one. Consulting fees tied to an Epstein entity, not disclosed to the board at the time, later described as having been folded into personal or family contributions without being separately identified, create exactly the kind of opacity that institutions should not tolerate when dealing with a convicted sex offender.

The board has said funds associated with Epstein will be directed to organizations supporting survivors of sexual harm. That step matters, but it does not erase the underlying issue. The question is not only where the money goes now. The question is why Epstein’s money, access, and invitations were allowed near Bard in the first place.

The board’s response also deserves scrutiny. Bard’s trustees said they received WilmerHale’s findings on April 30 and that Botstein then submitted his “retirement,” effective June 30. The board thanked him for more than five decades of service and called for an orderly transition. It also acknowledged that the concerns raised in recent months were serious and deeply felt.

An orderly transition may be administratively useful. It should not become a soft landing that replaces accountability.

Botstein’s 51 years at Bard are part of the story. His long tenure and influence explain why the institution may be inclined to frame his exit with gratitude and stability. But longevity cannot be allowed to swallow the findings. A five-decade legacy does not cancel out a review showing that the president minimized his relationship with Epstein, ignored warnings, pursued Epstein’s money, accepted consulting fees, and failed to consider how his actions could legitimize Epstein to victims and families.

That record has to remain visible.

Botstein’s own statement did not address WilmerHale’s findings. Instead, he said he had previously informed the board that, in light of his 51 years of service and upcoming 80th birthday, it had been his intention to retire from the presidency. He said he intended to remain a faculty member, teacher, and musician, and would live at Finberg House on Bard’s campus.

That response leaves a major silence. If an independent review finds that a college president minimized his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and failed to consider how his conduct could validate Epstein, a statement about prior retirement intentions does not answer the ethical questions. It avoids them.

The public should not have to choose between acknowledging Botstein’s long service and recognizing the gravity of the review. Both can be true. He may have shaped Bard for decades, and he may also have made decisions around Epstein that exposed a serious institutional failure. Service does not immunize judgment. Reputation does not erase responsibility.

The deeper question is how many institutions still rely on that kind of immunity.

Epstein’s network survived for so long because powerful people kept treating his presence as manageable. They treated him as complicated, useful, rehabilitated, eccentric, wealthy, or worth tolerating. They treated access to money as a reason to keep doors open. It looks like invitations, meetings, explanations, donor cultivation, private judgment calls, softened public statements, and decisions not to ask too many questions. But the risk was not borne equally. Epstein’s victims carried the consequences. Students and young women were the people who could be exposed. Families could see institutional affiliation as a signal of safety. Bard’s reputation could be used, directly or indirectly, as part of the broader legitimacy Epstein sought after his conviction.

That is why WilmerHale’s finding about legitimization matters so much. Epstein did not only need money. He had money. What he needed was social permission. He needed powerful people to keep taking meetings. He needed institutions to keep opening doors. He needed elite spaces to keep treating him as someone still worth knowing.

Every institution that gave him that permission has a record to answer for.

Bard is now facing that record through the review it commissioned. But accountability cannot stop at releasing a summary and arranging a transition. The college should fully confront how Epstein entered its orbit, who knew what, what warnings were raised, how decisions were made, why the board did not receive certain disclosures, what safeguards failed, and how students and community members will be protected from similar donor-driven failures in the future.

This is not only about Bard. It is about a broader elite culture that allowed Epstein to keep moving through respectable institutions long after his conviction. Universities, museums, philanthropies, scientific circles, and cultural institutions all have to answer the same question: what did powerful people decide to overlook because money was in the room?

The Botstein review shows how dangerous that question remains.

When a college president can make dozens of visits to Epstein’s townhouse, visit Little St. James, invite Epstein into the orbit of a college, accept fees from an Epstein entity, minimize the relationship publicly, and later retire after an independent review, the problem is not just one man’s judgment. It is the structure that made such judgment seem available.

Institutions should not need scandal to discover boundaries. They should not need public pressure to understand that a convicted sex offender seeking proximity to students, campuses, and cultural legitimacy is a danger. They should not treat survivor-centered accountability as something that happens only after reports are published and reputations are already threatened.

Bard’s board now says funds associated with Epstein will go to organizations that support survivors of sexual harm. That is appropriate, but it is also late. Survivors should not have to wait for institutional review processes to validate what was already clear: Epstein used power, money, and elite access to protect himself. Institutions helped make that possible when they continued to treat him as someone worth engaging.

The result is not clarity. It is churn—press statements, rescheduling talk, and contradictory messaging that keeps the center of gravity away from disclosure.

Bondi’s missed congressional deposition did not come as a shock. The House Oversight Committee had subpoenaed her in her capacity as attorney general, and the DOJ told the committee she would not appear for the April 14 hearing because she no longer held that office. Committee leadership then said they were “working to reschedule” while conferring internally on next steps, creating an immediate gap between the subpoena’s force and the government’s willingness to honor it.

That gap matters because the subpoena does not exist as political theater. It exists because Bondi oversaw the handling of Epstein investigative files during a period when survivors and the public expected a definitive accounting—then watched deadlines slip, disclosures stall, and explanations change shape. The question is whether Congress will actually use its authority, or whether it will negotiate away its leverage into an endless series of rescheduling statements. The committee can posture. Todd Blanche, now leading the DOJ temporarily, has claimed the department would back additional inquiries into Epstein and would support congressional hearings with victims. On its face, that sounds like movement. In practice, it is a statement that requires verification through action, not rhetoric.

Survivors and their advocates have heard variations of this language before: assurances that the system “takes this seriously,” paired with minimal disclosure, missed deadlines, and a steady narrowing of what the public is allowed to see. The credibility gap is not a messaging problem. It is a compliance problem.

Reporting also describes Blanche giving mixed signals at speed—downplaying controversy at one moment and endorsing further inquiry at another. That pattern does not build trust. It creates uncertainty that benefits the institution that controls the documents, the schedule, and the internal decision-making. When transparency becomes a promise that never cashes out, it functions as containment.

The Deadline Drift and the Fight Over Withholding

The Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA) mandated the release of investigative documents by December 19, and authorities missed that deadline repeatedly. Survivors have carried the burden of this story for years, and the system has repeatedly demanded that they prove their suffering in public while the institution withholds the documentary record that would explain how the machinery worked. This is why disclosure matters. The point is not to feed speculation. The point is to end ambiguity where ambiguity protects the powerful.

When public officials invoke survivors while refusing the basic mechanics of accountability—testimony, disclosure, enforceable timelines—the invocation becomes instrumental. It uses survivors as moral cover for institutional delay.

The White House Response Is Not Accountability

The White House has characterized Trump as “totally exonerated” and has claimed the administration has done more for Epstein’s victims than anyone before. It also framed further investigation as targeting “Democrat friends” of Epstein. That response is political messaging designed to redirect scrutiny and reframe accountability as factional warfare.

Accountability is not a campaign line. It is disclosure of investigative records, consistent compliance with legal demands, and a process that does not treat survivors as props. When a White House response centers exoneration claims and partisan targeting, it signals an intent to control the narrative rather than release the record.

This is the crux of the current moment: the administration is offering selective transparency shaped by political advantage, while survivors and the public are demanding full transparency shaped by evidence and law. Those are incompatible goals.

What “Next” Actually Looks Like

The practical path forward is not mysterious. It is the same path institutions resist because it removes their discretion.

First, Congress enforces its subpoena power: reschedule with a hard deadline, compel appearance, and pursue contempt if noncompliance continues. Second, Congress or other lawful plaintiffs pursue judicial enforcement to compel production of contested documents. Third, a district judge reviews withheld material in camera where necessary to determine whether exemptions are valid or being used as a shield.

That is how the public gets answers that are not mediated by political strategy. That is how survivors get a process that treats their demand for accountability as a legal obligation, not a public-relations topic.

Until those steps occur, “mixed messaging” will remain the operating system. It will look like movement while producing delay. It will sound like accountability while protecting discretion. And it will keep the Epstein record exactly where powerful institutions prefer it: incomplete, contested, and perpetually postponed.

Epstein died in federal custody in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges involving minors. His death was ruled a suicide by the New York City medical examiner. Now, lawmakers are seeking sworn answers from one of the correctional officers who was on duty the night Epstein was found dead inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.

The request comes as federal agencies continue releasing millions of pages of Epstein-related records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, legislation that ordered the Justice Department to disclose documents connected to Epstein’s detention, associates, and investigations.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer sent a formal letter to Noel on March 13 requesting that she appear for a transcribed interview with the committee on March 26. Comer said information obtained through public reporting, Justice Department releases, and documents gathered by the committee indicates Noel may have knowledge relevant to the investigation.

“Due to public reporting, documents released by the Department of Justice, and documents obtained by the Committee, the Committee believes you have information that will assist in its investigation,” Comer wrote in the letter requesting her testimony.

Noel worked as a correctional officer in the Special Housing Unit of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, the high-security unit where Epstein was being held. She was one of two guards assigned to monitor the tier the night Epstein died.

In 2019, federal prosecutors charged Noel and another guard, Michael Thomas, with falsifying official records. Prosecutors alleged the two officers failed to perform required prisoner checks during their shift and instead spent significant portions of the night at their desks. According to the indictment, no formal inmate counts were conducted in the Special Housing Unit from approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 9 until about 6:30 a.m. on August 10, when Epstein was discovered unresponsive in his cell.

The charges were later resolved through an agreement with prosecutors, and the case against Noel was ultimately dismissed. She did not admit guilt as part of that resolution.

A 2023 report issued by the Justice Department’s Inspector General provided additional details about activity in the unit that night. Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed a corrections officer believed to be Noel approaching the tier where Epstein’s cell was located at approximately 10:40 p.m. on August 9 while carrying linen or inmate clothing.

Investigators noted that this appeared to be the last recorded approach to Epstein’s tier before he was discovered the following morning.

During a sworn interview with investigators in 2021, Noel denied distributing linen to Epstein or providing him with any excess bedding found in his cell. She also told investigators she believed she was the last person to see Epstein alive, estimating that encounter occurred around 10:00 p.m. on the evening of August 9.

The committee’s request for Noel’s testimony is part of a broader congressional probe examining the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death and the federal government’s handling of evidence connected to his case.

The Justice Department has said it has released more than three million pages of records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, along with thousands of videos and images connected to the investigation. Additional materials have been identified for release pending court approvals and privacy reviews.

The department missed a December 19 deadline established by the 2025 law requiring the initial records release, but officials have continued uploading documents as part of the ongoing disclosure process. Some files posted online were later removed, prompting scrutiny from lawmakers and victims’ advocates over redactions and record handling.

Under the committee’s current schedule, Noel is expected to appear for a transcribed interview on March 26 unless the hearing is postponed or modified by investigators or the witness.

“The tragic love story between Jack and Rose was built on luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secret nude sketches. This monument honors the bond between Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, a friendship seemingly built on luxurious travel, raucous parties, and secret nude sketches.”

The latter is a reference to a racy birthday card for Epstein that seemingly bears Trump’s signature. (The card, with its sketch of what appeared to be a girl’s body, was the subject of a different installation by The Secret Handshake last year.) Trump has denied authoring the card.

Flanking the statue are several 10-foot banners featuring a photo of Trump and Epstein.

In a nod to the Justice Department’s heavy-handed redactions in its documents about Epstein, the banners also include an image resembling a federal agency logo — except part of the agency name is redacted.

Up close, the scale of the display becomes clearer — the statue centered, with banners stretching outward along the Mall.

Why the banners?

The Secret Handshake said it’s simple, really.

“Because 2026 has been a banner year for President Trump. Meaning… he’s added giant banners of his face to federal buildings all across DC. We want to help him on his mission by tossing a few of our own in the mix,” the group said.

Trump has not been able to kill the Epstein story and has claimed that the files that have been released about the dead financier have absolved him of any wrongdoing.

Jeffrey Epstein’s estate has entered into an agreement to resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by survivors, with payments totaling up to $35 million.
